Wrestling Mat Sizes: How to Choose the Right Mat for Your Room
Buying Guide
The right wrestling mat is the biggest one your room can hold with space left for wall padding. Here are the standard sizes and a simple way to pick yours.
Standard sizes
| Level | Typical mat | Circle |
|---|---|---|
| High school (NFHS) | about 38' × 38' | 28 ft minimum |
| College (NCAA) | 42' × 42' | 32 ft |
| International (UWW) | 12 × 12 m (about 39' × 39') | 7 m wrestling area |
| Youth club / practice | 24' × 24' to 30' × 30' | often one circle |
| Home / garage | 10' × 10' to 16' × 16' | no circle needed |
How to size your mat
- Measure the room wall to wall.
- Subtract about 4 inches per wall for 2" wall pads.
- Round down to the nearest mat size — or order a custom size.
- Leave doors clear: a mat that blocks a door is a trip hazard.
Example: a 32' × 32' room minus wall pads leaves about 31' × 31' — a 30' × 30' mat fits with room to spare.

Don't forget the walls
A mat stops at the wall — athletes don't. Pad every wall around the mat to about 6 ft. See our gym wall padding guide.
